Artifact 5: Primary Source Evaluation-OPVL

Buffalo Hunt, 1846
Francis Parkman was the man who was only 23 years old, and went to Indian village for experience the culture of Native American with his cousin in 1964, After all he published his book. Bison was the mean food resource foe the people who lived there, and that was why people have to approach the bison. The hunt was the mean way to them to life, sinew and bone of animals became tools, and hides became clothing and shelter. The hunt and its products gave rise to and supported complex social, political and cultural institutions.

There were two types of hunting, one was running, and another was approaching. Running was chasing on the horseback, and it was the most common but also the wildest one, and it was dangerous. A good hunter can hunt five to six cows a time. It's better to hunt a single cow than a bunch of cows, and maybe attack it when it's rest.

Approaching is practiced on foot, and it was better than running. You won't died if you full down from the horse. Buffalos are strange animals, sometimes they are stupid and infatuated, but in another time they will be so shy and careful.

Artifact 7: Influential British Artists, Poets, Writers, Musicians

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, British physician, novelist, and detective-story writer, creator of the unforgettable master sleuth Sherlock Holmes.

The Hound Of The Baskervilles
-Published in 1999

-The story is about Sir Charles got kill in the Baskervilles, and no one actually knew what happened. Someone said that that was a curse, and the next person who will died will be Sir Henry, the nephew of Sir Charles. Therefore, Holmes and Watson went to Baskervilles and wanted to find out what was going on. During the time they stayed in Baskervilles, they had seen lots of weird things, the terrified sound of hound, the man who standing on the hill, the latter from a woman called LL, and Mr and Mrs Stapletons were hiding some secret, all the things happened in the Baskervilles were all strange.

This is the part that I think is the most interesting, it is in chapter 13 "Fixing the Nets", and it's about Holmes and Watson noticed that the picture on the wall looks like sometime they seen before...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"What is it?" we both cried.
I could see as he looked down that he was repressing some internal emotion. His features were still composed, but his eyes shone with amused exultation.
"Excuse the admiration of a connoisseur," said he as he waved his hand towards the line of portraits which covered the opposite wall. "Watson won't allow that I know anything of art but that is mere jealousy because our views upon the subject differ. Now, these are a really very fine series of portraits."
"Well, I'm glad to hear you say so," said Sir Henry, glancing with some surprise at my friend. "I don't pretend to know much about these things, and I'd be a better judge of a horse or a steer than of a picture. I didn't know that you found time for such things."
"I know what is good when I see it, and I see it now. That's a Kneller, I'll swear, that lady in the blue silk over yonder, and the stout gentleman with the wig ought to be a Reynolds. They are all family portraits, I presume?"
    "Every one."
    "Do you know the names?"
"Barrymore has been coaching me in them, and I think I can say my lessons fairly well."
"Who is the gentleman with the telescope?"
"That is Rear-Admiral Baskerville, who served under Rodney in the West Indies. The man with the blue coat and the roll of paper is Sir William Baskerville, who was Chairman of Committees of the House of Commons under Pitt."
"And this Cavalier opposite to me -- the one with the black velvet and the lace?"
"Ah, you have a right to know about him. That is the cause of all the mischief, the wicked Hugo, who started the Hound of the Baskervilles. We're not likely to forget him."
I gazed with interest and some surprise upon the portrait.
"Dear me!" said Holmes, "he seems a quiet, meek-mannered man enough, but I dare say that there was a lurking devil in his eyes. I had pictured him as a more robust and ruffianly person."
"There's no doubt about the authenticity, for the name and the date, 1647, are on the back of the canvas."
Holmes said little more, but the picture of the old roysterer seemed to have a fascination for him, and his eyes were continually fixed upon it during supper. It was not until later, when Sir Henry had gone to his room, that I was able to follow the trend of his thoughts. He led me back into the banqueting-hall, his bedroom candle in his hand, and he held it up against the time-stained portrait on the wall.
    "Do you see anything there?"
I looked at the broad plumed hat, the curling love-locks, the white lace collar, and the straight, severe face which was framed between them. It was not a brutal countenance, but it was prim hard, and stern, with a firm-set, thin-lipped mouth, and a coldly intolerant eye.
"Is it like anyone you know?"
"There is something of Sir Henry about the jaw."
"Just a suggestion, perhaps. But wait an instant!" He stood upon a chair, and, holding up the light in his left hand, he curved

his right arm over the broad hat and round the long ringlets.

"Good heavens!" I cried in amazement.

The face of Stapleton had sprung out of the canvas.
"Ha, you see it now. My eyes have been trained to examine faces and not their trimmings. It is the first quality of a criminal investigator that he should see through a disguise."
"But this is marvellous. It might be his portrait."
"Yes, it is an interesting instance of a throwback, which appears to be both physical and spiritual. A study of family portraits is enough to convert a man to the doctrine of reincarnation. The fellow is a Baskerville -- that is evident."
    "With designs upon the succession."
"Exactly. This chance of the picture has supplied us with one of our most obvious missing links. We have him, Watson, we have him, and I dare swear that before to-morrow night he will be fluttering in our net as helpless as one of his own butterflies. A pin, a cork, and a card, and we add him to the Baker Street collection!" He burst into one of his rare fits of laughter as he turned away from the picture. I have not heard him laugh often, and it has always boded ill to somebody.
I was up betimes in the morning, but Holmes was afoot earlier still, for I saw him as I dressed, coming up the drive.
"Yes, we should have a full day to-day," he remarked, and he rubbed his hands with

The program mandated a certain level of wages, housing, food and medical care for the worker. The poor and unemployed within Mexico were illegal and employment was attractive enough to motivate many people who work in United Stated illegally.

Labor unions which tried to organize agricultural workers after WWII targeted the Bracero program as a key impediment to improving the wages of domestic farm workers. The end of bracero program in 1964 was followed by the rise to prominence of the united Farm Workers, and the subsequent transformation of American migrant worker.

Cause is a very important part of an event, because every happening have a cause.
And another important thing is effect, an event should have a cause and then have a effect, so cause really relate to effect. Urbanization is a situation that the city start to alter, and it usually spend a lot of time.
Three are three examples for urbanization. The first one is about high paying job, the population of a city is usually changeable, and high paying job is one of the cause. People who work in the country, such as the ranch or a farm, I think they may get the less income than people who work in city, and so people in country may move to city for the high paying job, and that will make the population increase.
The second one is industrial revolution. It is a very big change in economy , it happened in British from 1760 to 1830. The cause was that they change the way they produce every stuff, all the thing was made by hand before, but then machines appeared, then it instead of hand making, and it really changed people's life. After that many factory had build, and British became the first industrial society.
The last one is population migration. It mean the changeability of people, but actually it cause lots of problems, because of there is too many people moving to a place, and some people may not have enough space to live, and unemployment may be more and more. There are some reasons people want to move to cities, more jobs, nice facilities, and maybe fancy life. Oppositely, country will be full of elder. It is a social process, people move because of the environment, though it is a process, but it still cause lots of problems.

Artifact 13: Gapminder Analysis and a Data-Driven Worldview

Income per Person VS Children per Woman
The first graph I choose is "Income per person" vs "Children per woman." I choose these two because I think children per woman really related to the income of a person in 19 century, even nowaday people think of these two related problems. In 1800 to 1820 in the graph, children per woman started move around from 5 to 5.5, and it increase first, and then decrease, and then increase and then decrease, but the income per person didn't change a lot, it started about 3000, and during 1800~1820, it just increase a little bit. Started from 1820, the measure of children per woman started to fall, but the income per person increase to 4000 finally. From 1860~1880, income per person increase more, and children per woman increase a little bit. At the end of 19 century(1880~1890), income per person grow obviously, nevertheless, children per woman fall a lot gradually.

Life Expectancy VS CO2 Emission
In 1800, life expectancy was 40, and CO2 emission was lower than 5. From 1820 to 1860, CO2 emission started to increase, but it wasn't a lot, and life expectancy decrease first, and then increase and then decrease and increase. From 1840 to 1860, life expectancy really changed a lot, it keep moving up and down around 35 to 45, and CO2 emission still move around from zero to ten. Though life expectancy both increase and decrease a lot, but it's still move to about 45 in 1860 to 1880. From 1880 to 1900, CO2 emission increase to over ten, and life expectancy increase to 48. This graph show that CO2 emission kept increasing in 19 century, I think it was because of people started to do something with machine. And life expectancy had increase in 19 century, because medical treatment was better from 1820 to 1900.

Children per Woman VS CO2 Emission
Children per woman was about 5.7, and CO2 emission was about 3 in 1820. And children per woman drop a lot from 1820 to 1840, and CO2 emission didn't change a lot. From 1840 to 1860, CO2 emission finally increase, and children per woman had increase too. And CO2 emission kept increasing until 1874, and then started to drop, and kept dropping, and CO2 emission didn't change a lot during 1860 to 1900. It show that children of per woman was not that much as in early year, and the measure of children started to fall gradually.
